Welcome to Tech of the Month, BikeRadar’s monthly roundup of the shiniest gadgets and gizmos to arrive at our HQ over the last few weeks!
This time we have the latest flagship Smartwatch for Garmin, the Fenix 7, Specialized S-Works 7 Lace shoes, an action camera that might finally make us move on from our beloved GoPro Hero 8 (spoiler, it’s the GoPro Hero 10) and a bike that Video Manager Felix thinks could be a bike for life in the shape of the Fairlight Strael.
Are you in favour of a smartwatch over a cycling computer? What’s your go-to action camera? Lace-up cycling shoes, yes or no? Let us know what you think of all the tech shown in the comments section below!
First up, Simon takes you through the Specialized S-works 7 Laced. He’s a huge fan of lace up cycling shoes and is excited to see all the technology from their Boa Dialled counterparts brought into the lace version. Even better than that is the cost saving from losing the Boa’s is passed onto the consumer, although these do still come in at £300!
Then Stan Portus gives you the overview of Garmin’s latest multisport watch, the Fenix 7. It has modes for mountain bike, road and even indoor cycling to ensure you’re tracking your activity. As with the previous version there is also GPS to map your route and ensure you only leave the path when you want.
In a late call up, Felix runs you through the Fairlight Strael 3.0. A steel framed, wide-tyred road bike designed to provide comfort for long distance rides. It also happens to feature the latest, semi wireless, 12 speed Shimano Dura-Ace R9200 groupset.
Finally, videographer Max gets to grips with the newest offering from GoPro. With a little help from his dog Floki, he dips his toes (and tail) into the Hero 10 which can now film in up to 5.3k! Will it finally be the camera to get us to move away from our trusty GoPro 8?

What do you think of these tasty bits of tech? Are laces on bikes way too old school? Is 5.3k far too much a GoPro? Would you love to have a go on the Strael? Let us know what you think in the comments!
Why is that Dura Ace rear mech so dirty?
Qu est ce qui se passe quand le lacet se bloque dans la chai ne?
Fashion fad, stay with bike computer, flagship, great build of course, 5k why not?
£300 cycle shoes are just a bad idea. End of.
Almost certainly the least relevant series of product reviews for ‘ordinary’ cyclists produced by Bike Radar. Most (all?) items cost more than the average weekly wage where many viewers live. Is this really the road Bike Radar has decided to follow? Disappointing.
OMgoodness. What a boll*x bike. Steel is hard and heavy, topped with a super exe/complicated groupset. You guys are from another planet.
Lace cycling shoes are not a good idea in my opinion. If they start coming undone the laces can get caught in the drivetrain. A lace cover would solve this but the Boa dial is a better solution.
Nothing is future proof, some standard on that bike will be abandoned and obsolete some day.
Laces can be a hassle but they also look really cool
I'm chomping at the bit to get the Fenix7 as i think that stamina feature is awesome.
That Fairlight looks rather nice and room for proper tyres…..and that GoPro looks rather spicy…..I'm still using a Hero 7 Black occasionally….
If you believe the laces on the S-works 7 with laces will prevent pressure points on the top of your feet, just consider the S-Works Ares instead of going with laces.
You don't think "Fenix" should be pronounced like "Felix"? Like Felix Smith?
Specialized need to cater for the other XX% of people who have wide feet! Been waiting for a long time and still waiting. Even Fizik have finally figured out that not everyone has narrow feet. I want to wear a pair of specialized shoes but physically cannot fit into them!
V nice looking Fairlight. but no moumts on the fork? Booh..
I like it my size is 41..
I'm big fun of steel frames. Great bike. Cheers from Greece…
No lace up is a hipster fashion trend. I hope it goes away soon.
It's my bike computer I couldn't live without.
I'm lusting after the Fairlight already. Love steel frames and the color is awesome.
Speaking as a GoPro Hero 4 user – sounds as though now is a great time to upgrade – to Hero8 as it should be available at a bargain price with the release of Hero10!
BOA are fun u til yij need to replace them.. Replacement cost for BOA are $50 EACH have fun suckers
GoPro??????🤔
Anyone who’s ever had a lace wrap around their pedal axle will tell you that lace up cycling shoes are just plain dangerous.
The Fairlight is lovely.
4:06 when he finally stops banging on about a pair of shoes – WITH LACES!
You're welcome.
The is a sweet point between stiffness and flex for optimal power transfer. Specailized shoes are not the best out there. Personally, I love the SIDIs
