Reminds me of my favorite TED Talk.
Graham Hill: "What's in the box? Whatever it is must be pretty important, because I've traveled with it, moved it, from apartment to apartment to apartment. Sound familiar?"

Yeah, this video does have its own special appeal. I like it, watching some guy, probably half my age, rummaging about in a box of treasured junk. – If I went out to one of my outbuildings right now, I'll bet I could lay my hands on at least a dozen such boxes of junk. They'll have been there for twenty odd years, and some, maybe more, but that's just my nature – I can't abide throwing things away just because they're old, or even if they don't work. Nonworking things can be fixed!

My step dad had a betamax with a dozen tapes back when I was a kid. He was adamant about it being the 'best'. He was probably right, but he was the only one yelling that that I knew.

I still get floppies, 5.25" and 3.5" too because I like the physical media for Commodore 64 and Amiga 500. So I copy games (or at the moment only plan to) on them and play games from the actual media on an actual hardware.

I recorded movies from TV and kept them for a long-long time. I used LP so I could fit 2 or sometimes 3 movies on a tape. I was always ready to stop/pause the recording when ads came on and resume when the ads ended. It was a weird feeling and I hardly ever think back but now you made me think back. I remember the feeling, the dread of trying to record stuff on the tape and before the movie ended the tape just ran out and heard the VCR stop, clanking and proceeded to wind back the tape. It was devastating to say the least 😀 Ohh, and I had a lot of used VHS tapes in around 2000 and started to record Dragon Ball Z episodes off TV, because my brother liked it too but he was always at work so he couldn't watch it. I hade many cassettes full of Dragon Ball Z and I think he never watched them eventually 🙁

Sometimes in the early 2000's I threw out our VCR because it had some problems, I could fix it probably today but I didn't know what to look for back then and threw away every piece of VHS tapes. I grew up with them, I recorded most of them (recorded over my dad's stuff) but when the time came I just threw them all out. I still don't know if I did right or wrong… I kept only 1 tape and that is a genuine copy of Final Fantasy – The Spirits Within I got from my older sister for my birthday back around 2002-2003.

Wow. You are terrible at actually throwing stuff away. So am I. I feel so reflected. I always struggle with the idea that somewhere someone is in need of this exact thing. 🙂
Okay, you tell stories, here's one of mine: I have tons of Floppys, ZIPs and DATs from my late dad who worked as a composer for commercials in the 80s and 90s. I'll probably never find time to save what's still left on them, but who am I to throw away such genuine history?
