George Soros Lecture Series: General Theory of Reflexivity finance lecture series

by alsaCEMusic

Open Society Foundations chairman and founder George Soros shares his latest thinking on economics and politics in a five-part lecture series recorded at Central European University, October 26-30, 2009. The lectures are the culmination of a lifetime of practical and philosophical reflection.

Soros discusses his general theory of reflexivity and its application to financial markets, providing insights into the recent financial crisis. The third and fourth lectures examine the concept of open society, which has guided Soros’s global philanthropy, as well as the potential for conflict between capitalism and open society. The closing lecture focuses on the way ahead, examining the increasingly important economic and political role that China will play in the future.

A question (posed in 2021): the Soros family survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary. George Soros even found the clandestine life under a false identity "exhilarating" in spite of the deadly danger surrounding him and his family. If he could survive such a hell on earth why would he want to leave Hungary under the (relatively) milder Soviet regime?

I will be interested in the conversation between Soros and Jesus when Jesus returns to judge the quick and the dead. I'm planning on manning the popcorn machine. It will be a doozy!

Reflexivity makes a point analogous to the Buddhist tenet: Attachment leads to dukkha. Particularly in the US, the field of economics is not one of inquiry but proselytization. It is functional not reflective.

Imagine that conversation between George and his critics:
Critic: "You're stating the obvious, George. Duh!"
George: "Then why do people keep acting and behaving as if it's not?"

TLDR: market participants and policy makers are irrational and the over/under valuations of certain asset classes reflect that irrationality through bubbles.

he basically meant:
no matter how alchemist yelled at their potions to turn to gold, they will never succeed, because natural physics don’t obey to you mortal ass people.

But in social science, where people can be influenced by each other and past experiences, you can’t replicate any scientific experiment because the social physics is updating itself all the time.

I knew that he was intelligent by the enormous success he made in the markets, but i never expected for Soros to be such philosophycal Genius. He is just too briilliant, and his success in the markets are the proof of value of his philosophy.

My German mother-in-law's close friend liked to say: "Hitler wasn't a such a bad guy." Why that popped-up in my head when watching this video is chilling. Communism has NO place in the free world and we must fight attempts like this with every fiber of our being. Make no mistake: Soros and his son are wolves in sheep's clothing.

I do not disagree with this man whom my mother tells me may be the antichrist. As an engineer, or cyberneticist I would think of [observability, controllability], and [measurement, process, and control] errors. In my personal philosophy manipulation is, in general, to be avoided as very likely to result in evil. My modus favors that of attempting to qualify "reflexive" statements with the appropriate amount of objectivity and to impact the world through the most accurate representation of the knowledge I have available to my rather limited intellect. It's amazing how few people even bother, and how little this contribution seems to be valued.

What is his purpose with all this philosophizing? His sophomoric expousing of meaning of reality is tiresome and redundant.

Thanks JS. Aligns perfectly with your book. I appreciate your stance on some regulation based on the reflexivity phenomenon. I also appreciate how you validated your theory by putting it to work for you. BF skinner did much the same with his conditioned response theory. I’m afraid that YouTube draws many many ignorant people, but I imagine you know that already. Cheers!

Imagine having foreskins for eyelids. That's when you know you're old and it's time to stop drinking baby spinal fluid. Also he sold out his fellow Jews for wealth and favor with the Nazis. It's all there. You just need to read a book, because the media won't tell you the truth.
