I think batteries are a kind of lottery, every now and again there is a set that lasts forever, I have a little caseless single led torch I use on my bedside, doesn't get a ton of use just when I drop something etc but as it doesn't have a case I'll know if it leaks, but the 2 eveready aa batteries have been working for about 15 years at this point, I haven't changed them since I bought it from the second hand shop meanwhile I've gone through 4 sets of 3 aaa's in 4 years on a led switch light that while significantly brighter gets used way less frequently

Once they start leaking, it's too late. The camera will be living on borrowed time if those vapours got in it.

Change them 6 years ago, buddy.

I have a similar "strong" battery. I don't know the exact date when the battery got first used but these batteries aren't sold anymore since 2008. Its a travel alarm clock. This clock is running 24/7 and still works. The light still works, when not used after a minute passed or repeatedly.
I don't want to take them out to check on the date and the voltage left, because I fear they might die on me. They still can change the time during daylight savings, so this fear might be unreasonable.

put em in a case!!

I really want to see how you pedantic mind goes about putting them in a case to try and simulate the environment of the camera to see how much longer you could have gone before leaking occured

I've got a set of Energizer rechargeables that are around 15 years old and their still good. They last forever in my remote controls

6:00 Having to do the battery change fast or lose the settings gave me a flashback to early PalmPilot days. 🥶😄

in my experience batteries will only leak when drained. If the camera doesn’t draw anything from them while powered off, batteries can last a really long time. I haven seen batteries with an expiration date of the early 90’s still being able to power up an incandescent flashlight.. last year.

Wouldn't it be safer to just leave the batteries on the shelf next to the camera?

You lucked out. I quit buying Kirkland because I had so many that leaked.

I’d put money on incredible luck.

Just noticed that our unopened set of AAs, 10 year shelf life, all had white crustiness. I know they’re from 2016, but fucking really? Guess that’s what I get for buying el cheapos for my whole 2 devices that need batteries once or twice a year…

Over the holidays, I was helping mum with her little light up Christmas house decorations that we haven’t used in about a decade. They all had different battery types, a couple ended up leaking, some were completely dead, but the kirkland ones were perfectly fine and still worked. No idea how they’re so good

Those old Kirkland batteries are probably before Duracell was the supplier for Costco, because NOW the Kirkland's leak, just like Duracells.

Tipsy and off the cuff? Talking about something simple? While I struggle to solder together a bastard child made of knowledge I refuse to admit I've lost, using tools that aren't right for the job? No wonder I've followed your channel for years.

I've had good luck with Panasonic brand batteries (technically AA/AAA/C/D sizes are cells not Batteries which are banks of cells like a 9V battery which is usually 6 AAAA cells in a special box). A while ago I bought a Panasonic VCR that still had the original cells from a something like 5 years past their expiration date still working.
Several years later I realized the local dollar store carries Panasonic batteries and (mostly) switched to those. So far they haven't given me grief….
Better than I can say for big name brands that start with D and E….Some of their extra reliable badged variants have leaked within a year of purchase and several years before expiration date (garbage product worthy of a false advertisement/property damage lawsuit).

Manual film winding is just so satisfying. I usually use cameras with powered winders whenever I (rarely these days) shoot film, but I'll often just pick up one of my totally manual old cameras and sit there just winding on and firing the shutter with no film in, it's like a weird comforting tactile thing.

kirklands cells are re-branded duracell if i recall.. just becareful with em. i have a pair of NiHM cells almost 20 years old and still holding about 8 hour charge in some use cases i don't know what they did with those back then but seem to not want to give up at all.

That’s very lucky. I’ve had so many alkaline batteries leak inside stuff and erode the springs for the batteries. I always use rechargeable batteries whenever possible. They don’t seem to go bad that way

It's astounding that those batteries lasted so long. I bought a large box of Kirkland batteries with an expiration date in 2024 and half of them were dead when I opened the package. The other half I'm lucky if ant given battery lasts more than a couple days

Maybe let the batteries finish their existence with usage in an LED light
